FAQs
Why are the Alberta Beer Awards only open to ASBA members?
The Alberta Beer Awards are coordinated and hosted by the Alberta Small Brewers Association (ASBA). ASBA includes more than 70% of eligible small breweries within our membership. The Alberta Beer Awards are a great event we would be happy to see more breweries participate in. They are also a mechanism for the association to do our advocacy work and a marketing opportunity for winning breweries. All of that on top of a community building initiative for the industry. Planning, coordinating and hosting the judging and awards gala is no small undertaking for our small staff. For these reasons, the Alberta Beer Awards only includes ASBA members.
How many categories are included in the Alberta Beer Awards?
The 2023 Alberta Beer Awards includes 31 beer categories and 2 other categories, “Craft Soda and Lemonade” and “Seltzer and Ready-to-Drink Beverages”. The full list can be viewed here.
What is the judging process for the Alberta Beer Awards?
ASBA partners with two Master level BJCP judges to administer and oversee the judging of the Alberta Beer Awards. Categories are judged closely to BJCP standards with some consideration of consumer taste. We welcome judges of all levels of expertise, though we encourage BJCP certification or Cicerone, or having the plan to test.
